I’ve had trouble with my weight my whole life. In fact, obesity runs in my family. When I was a teenager, my weight really got out of control. That was a hard time for me. I didn’t feel pretty or confident. Simple things that were easy for other kids to do were hard for me – so I was often left out of activities. Since other people in my family had health issues related to their weight, I worried about what would happen to me as I got older.

A few years ago, my mom had weight loss surgery. It really worked for her. She lost a lot of weight. Since I was up to 288 lbs, and diets weren’t working for me, I decided to try surgery, too.

It wasn’t easy, but it was definitely worth it. Weight loss surgery was the tool I needed to get my weight under control. I’ve lost 140 lbs. I love the way I feel, and I’m comfortable with the way I look now. A few months after the procedure, I met the man who would become my husband. We fell in love and got married, and we just had our first baby.

I’ll never forget the day I knew my life had changed for the better. I was sitting up on a wall. There was about a two foot drop from where my feet were to the ground. I was ready to get down, and I asked my husband to come over and help me off the wall. He told me to jump down, but I was afraid to do it. I thought I’d hurt myself. My husband insisted – he told me I’d be okay – so, finally, I jumped. It was easy. I didn’t fall. It didn’t hurt. It was such a simple thing – to jump down from a wall – and for me it was a defining moment – the moment I felt like I had taken control of my life.
