In the summer of 2001, I went in for a check up and got some very disturbing news from my doctor. He told me my cholesterol was high, my blood pressure was out of control, and the heel spurs that caused pain with every step I took were directly attributable to my weight. At this point, I weighed 375 lbs. and I felt terrible. I was tired and achy all the time. Since I have a history of diabetes in my family, the doctor told me I was at high risk for more health problems. He told me I had to do something about my weight – immediately. If I didn’t, he said, I could get very sick or even die. That scared me, because I have a wife and daughter to take care of.

I was worried, but I didn’t make a decision to do something about my weight until the day I was playing with my daughter in the backyard. We were running around, but after a few minutes, I got tired and had to rest. My daughter came over to where I was sitting and begged me to get up and chase her around the yard. I wanted to, but I didn’t have the energy or the strength. I just couldn’t do it. That was the day I decided to have weight loss surgery.

Since then, I’ve lost 175 lbs. and my health has improved dramatically. Now, I think of every day as a gift. I enjoy my life, especially spending time with my wife and daughter. I have a lot to live for, and I’m living life to its fullest.
